Things to Remember When Running a Lawn Care Business

When running a lawn care business there are a few things you need to remember to protect yourself and equipment.  Here are just a few tips to keep you and your equipment safe.

  • Engage and disengage hydraulic clutches at idle to protect the belts and driveline.
  • Give the engine time to warm up before running at full throttle to make sure the engine is at its proper operating temperature.
  • Idle the engine down for a minute and let it cool before shutting down.
  • Have safety goggles, ear plugs and sunscreen and use it!
  • Keep an emergency eyewash kit
  • Always lock the trailer.  Don’t assume that when you are in a “good” neighborhood that someone won’t steal your stuff
  • Make a list of your inventory with serial numbers and the cross reference of parts
  • Keep a three ring binder with
    • Emergency contact information
    • Local hospitals
    • Insurance agent and insurance information
    • Numbers for owner, foreman, and crew
    • Safety checklist with a spot to initial for whoever does the checking for fluid and maintenance on equipment.
    • MSDs (Material Safety Data Sheets) for any chemicals you use.
    • Marketing materials
    • Customer profiles
  • Extra stuff to have on the trailer
    • Fix-a-flat
    • Belts
    • Blades
    • Dry chemical fire extinguisher
    • Business cards
